EU-WIDE GM LABELLING RULES COME INTO FORCE
BUT MORATORIUM ON NEW GM AUTHORISATIONS FACES NEW THREAT

NEW rules requiring the labelling of all food and animal feed containing GM
ingredients come into force this week, giving the EU one of the toughest
regulatory frameworks for the marketing of GM anywhere in the world.

The regulations, which were adopted by the European Parliament and the
Council of EU Agriculture Ministers last year but only came into force on
Sunday (April 18th), cover GMOs for food or animal feed use, or any food or
feed containing or processed from GMOs.

>From Sunday, any such produce whose GM-derived content is more than 0.9 per
cent will need to be clearly labelled - and traceable to its origins - to
ensure consumers have the right to say 'No! to GM'.

Green Party Euro-MPs, who played a key role in shaping the regulations, said
consumers who wanted to maintain a GM-free diet would be delighted by the
news.
