He was commenting on the wish of Elton John and his partner David Furnish to adopt a 14 month old boy, Lev, who they meet while visiting a HIV orphanage in the Ukraine:

"Some celebrity adoptions of children from developing countries have been criticised. Famous people should not get special treatment. It is preferable for children to be adopted in their home countries," added Mr Tatchell.
"As a last resort, international adoption is probably in Lev's best interests. Providing agreement can be reached with the Ukrainian government, the orphanage and the child's relatives, this adoption could be a good thing. With David and Elton as his adoptive parents, Lev will get a very good start in life.
"Given that David and Elton are an internationally famous gay couple, adopting Lev could help break down ignorance and prejudice concerning gay adoption. They could become role model gay adoptive parents and help raise worldwide awareness about same-sex parenting.
"I hope this publicity will encourage more people - gay and straight - to consider adopting a child in need, or to support charities that help support parents who are struggling to cope with their children," said Mr Tatchell.
