Gay people in North Yorkshire are being consulted by the county council as it prepares for its first civil partnership ceremonies later this year.
The authority wants to find out what requirements the gay community has for the ceremonies which begin in December.

It set up two focus groups which have met in Scarborough and Harrogate.

They discussed the level of demand' the wording of the ceremony' reading and music content' likely locations and promotion campaigns.

Discretion pledge

John Fort' the council's executive member for community services' said: "These focus groups are an important first stage in consulting with the gay community on civil partnerships.

"One of the main issues raised was the need for discretion and we are pleased that we could reassure the gay community on this point.

"We also heard requests for practical details on how to arrange the ceremony' as well as preferences for music' readings and the actual venues.

"As a result we've already expanded our website content to respond to these requests' and will now be able to produce information leaflets that will answer these and other questions."

North Yorkshire has 10 register offices and almost 100 licensed venues available for civil partnership services.
