As the Green Party's MEP for the South East, Caroline has been fighting hard in Europe for environmental and social justice. Now wanting to stand as an MP in Brighton and Hove at the next general election, she could be the UK's first Green Member of Parliament.

Congratulations on becoming the Observer's Ethical Politician of the Year! How does it feel?

"Well, it feels fantastic of course - but it really isn't personal. The award is in recognition of the increasing relevance of the Green's social and environmental message."

Caroline Lucas MEP How do you find living in Brighton?

"Brighton is something of an adopted home for me. It's a special place - its vibrancy, diversity and quirkiness make it pretty unique - and its location has enabled it to develop its own character, quite separate sometimes from the rest of the region."

What do you think are the most serious issues facing humanity at the moment?

"Climate change is the most pressing issue facing us all. If we don't take radical steps, its worst impacts will be felt by the world's poorest who are least responsible for the problem in the first place."

You gave a rousing speech at this year's Brighton IDAHOBIT event. How important do you think it is to have an International Day Against Homophobia?

"It's essential to focus attention on LGBT rights and the fight against discrimination. There are 77 countries in the world which still persecute people for their sexuality, and even here in tolerant Brighton LGBT people report high levels of homophobic and transphobic discrimination and abuse. As long as that remains the case we must campaign hard - and IDAHO provides a political focus for that to happen on a global scale."

Do you envisage a time when homosexuality will be decriminalised across the world?

"Yes - I am an optimist and believe that international agreement on human rights standards will prevail. We must push at every level for the UN to adopt a clear treaty prohibiting all discrimination against all marginalised communities - and for all countries to sign it. It's a global challenge but we must start by seeking commitment to this from local and national politicians in our own communities."

How would you describe your ideal society?

"Fair, prosperous, diverse and happy - with everyone living in peace with one another and the environment!"
