Protestors and campaigners are set to take to the streets of Bromley this weekend' in a march against the London borough's stance on civil partnerships.

Members of the local lesbian and gay community' as well as protestors from across the UK' are expected to take part in the march.

They will be protesting against the local council's decision to ban civil partnership ceremonies in the borough' when the new legislation comes into force in December.

Although the new laws ensure all councils in the UK comply with the registration system' ceremonies are not compulsory.

Leaders of Bromley's council have already said they will not allow ceremonies to take place because they do not "wish to condone gay marriage".

The comments have caused widespread condemnation from lesbian and gay people' as well as other politicians.

London's Mayor Ken Livingstone has already written to Michael Howard calling for action to be taken against the Tory-run council. Howard has declined to intervene in the row.

Livingstone has also called for legal action to be taken against Bromley in light of its decision.

The march will begin at The Crown and Anchor pub on Park Road at 11am this Saturday and will end at the Bromley Civic centre' where activists will hand a petition to the council.

Organisers and local police say they expect the wide coverage of Bromley's actions to lead to a high number of marchers.
