Brighton has been named by the Vegetarian Society as the best destination in the UK for vegetarians.

Local restaurant Terre a Terre in East Street was runner-up in the best gourmet venue section, won by Cafe Maitreya in Bristol.

Brighton's Wai Kika Moo Kau in Meeting House Lane was shortlisted in the fast food section, won by V1, Nottingham.

Nominated by members of the public, Brighton won because of its selection of vegetarian restaurants and cafes, vegetarian-friendly accommodation and even vegetarian shoeshops. The city also scored well for information about suitable facilities.

Deputy council leader Sue John said: "It's a great honour but fully justified. There are some fantastic vegetarian venues in the city.
They're a major addition to what we can offer residents and tourists and enjoyed by people whether or not they're vegetarians. Huge congratulations and thanks to those shortlisted and others that have helped the city earn this reputati
