Football teams from across the country will be urged to sign up to an anti-homophobia drive this week, as a gay summit hosted by the Football Association opens in Coventry.

The FA is hoping that more teams will join the drive, which is aiming to highlight the impact of homophobia and anti-gay taunts on the terraces.

Lucy Faulkner, the FA's Ethics and Sports Equity said that the project was aiming to make all fans feel safe at football matches.

Although only Manchester United, Manchester City and Brighton and Hove Albion are the only three teams to so far sign up to the initiative, she said she hopes more teams would join the project at Wednesday's meeting.

"The clubs have all done a fantastic job in tackling racism. But this is another form of discrimination they need to engage with.

"If the teams send out this message it will have a much bigger impact than me sitting here in [FA headquarters] Soho Square saying it again and again.2

The summit will be held on Wednesday at the Coventry Ricoh Arena.
