ARGUS READERS SAY YES TO AIDS MEMORIAL

An independent poll of readers by The Argus has resulted in more than 65% of their readers being in favour of the proposed Permanent Aids Memorial.

The poll was set up after the Argus received an email from a person who disliked the proposed designs which have been put to a public vote this month.

Offensive comments on the Argus website about people suffering from AIDS/HIV accompanied publication of the poll. The Argus moved quickly to remove the comments over last weekend.

The Aids Memorial is an LGBT community led project set up by the former LIB DEM Chair of The Equalities Forum, Paul Elgood and has cross party support with Trustees from each of the political parties. Brian Oxley, Conservative, Bill Randall, Greens and former leader of the council and prospective Labour candidate for Kemp Town, Simon Burgess.

Lib Dem Cllr for Brunswick and Adelaide Paul Elgood said: 'It's great news that more than 65% of readers that responded to the Argus Poll share our vision for an Aids Memorial in Brighton. A comment left by someone on the Real Brighton website over the weekend says it all,

'Let us give something back to those who loved us. The list is so long and will get longer.'

'I urge everyone to register their preferred design option at www.realbrighton/aidsmemorial. Once the preferred option has been chosen we can get down to the real work of making this project happen.'

The Argus removed the poll from their website at Noon on Wednesday September 12.
