Greens strike historic blow for worker's rights, Green MEPs help scrap Britain's "opt out" of 48 hr working week

Greens "are delighted" to have helped push through historic workers' rights legislation, that will impose a 48 hr limit on the British working week - in the face of opposition from every other major Uk party.

This morning, Green MEPs voted in the European Parliament to adopt working time legislation that ends Britain's 10yr "opt-out"(1) of the EU Working Time Directive. This has allowed British employers to waiver the EU 48hr limits on the working week. Jean Lambert, Green MEP for London and Green Co-ordinator for Committee for Employment and Social Affairs, comments: "The Green vote represents a clear opposition to British long hours culture which poses a clear threat to workers health and safety."
