Info
Trans & Intersex Pride Dublin takes place on Saturday the 16th July 2022.
On July 16th, we will be marching from Garden of Remembrance to Merrion Square. While this is a protest for trans and intersex rights, we will also be celebrating our victories. We are calling for all trans, non-binary, intersex and cis people to attend. We encourage you all to bring friends, family members, co-workers and fellow students and help us build a movement to actively fight for bodily autonomy for trans and intersex people as well as an end to the transphobic and homophobic attacks we have witnessed.
There’s the ever-growing crisis of the trans healthcare system in Ireland. Trans youth have no access to gender-affirming care, as the Gender Identity adolescent clinic in Crumlin Hospital is no longer running as of January 2021. The waiting list for Loughlinstown, is ranging for 6-10 years long. Long waiting times aren’t the only problem, we’re often asked highly sexualised, invasive personal questions about our childhood, family life, sexuality and any trauma or abuse we’ve faced. The model of ‘care’ the NGS provides is outdated and archaic, leading many to turn to more expensive options, like Gender GP or DIY HRT for those who can’t afford to go private. There are currently no options for gender-affirming surgeries, many trans people have to fundraise and travel to countries like the UK or Poland.
In Ireland and globally, intersex babies are given medically unnecessary and nonconsensual operations in order to conform their bodies to the gender/sex binary. These surgeries have high complication rates and lifelong consequences such as infertility, reduced sexual function, and other physical and mental health impacts, This leaves intersex people in the dark about their bodies and further perpetuates the stigma associated with being intersex. Intersex Genital Mutilations (IGM) is a harmful practice that needs to end, and further education about intersex people is needed throughout wider society.
Trans & Intersex Pride Dublin is taking to the streets this year to both liberate us from oppressive gender roles (which oppress even cis people) and to challenge the homophobic and transphobic attacks our community has suffered over the last few years.
The gender and sex binary are a product of western colonialism, which harms all of us. Even cisgender people are imprisoned by the societal (and often sexist) expectations placed upon them (such as men finding it difficult to talk about their mental health or women feeling like they must conform to incredibly narrow and unrealistic beauty standards).
We refuse to be imprisoned any longer. It is well past the time to smash the binary and the oppression it perpetuates. The voices of the trans, intersex and queer community will no longer be silenced or ignored.
Furthermore, we’re bringing pride back to its radical roots of protest. Those who profit from our suffering, deny us our rights or benefit from our exploitation in any way are not welcome.
