Winter Pride Saturday 2nd - Sunday 10th February 2008
Sponsored by Barefoot Wine, Brighton's fastest growing wine
The largest winter LGBT festival in the UK with over 70 events throughout Brighton
and Hove - Why wait for the summer?
Winter Pride 2008 looks set to be the most successful year so far, with over seventy
events across the city from Hove to Hanover. More than 35 different venues will
be involved along with local community groups, businesses and volunteers. With something
for everyone, there will be plenty of opportunity to warm up those long, cold, dark
evenings.
The week will include twelve events grant funded by Pride; these are organised by
LGBT community and voluntary groups and range from activities as diverse as nude
swims, conferences, lectures, comedy workshops and music. Highlights during the
week include:
- An evening of 17th & 18th century baroque music at the Unitarian Church on Saturday
9th.
- BLAGSS (Brighton Lesbian and Gay Sports Society) are returning with their very successful
10-pin bowling night at Bowlplex on Tuesday 5th in addition to a walk over the beautiful
Sussex Downs on Sun 3rd.
- The Brighton Wotever Crew are holding their first Wotever weekender during Winter
Pride with two days of workshops, queer café, film shows, music, dance, DJs and
performers, at Westhill Community Hall on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th.
- Two transgender events are taking place; a 80s trans disco at Brighton Royal Hotel
on Saturday 2nd and a trans film night at the Friends Meeting House is on Wed 6th.
Once again the local LGBT business community has pulled out all the stops to add
to a great calendar of events. There will be quizzes, cabaret, music, karaoke, casino
nights, comedy nights and not forgetting round three of the now famous lesbian mud
wrestling! Highlights during the week include:
- For the first time ever The Marlborough Little Theatre present a special Winter
Pride pantomime; Fingeralla and the Smuggly Fisters is Cinderella with a twist!
From Saturday 2nd - Wednesday 6th.
- Two popular Summer Pride events return; the 24-hr static cycle marathon starts on
Monday 4th by Jeremy at sexy toy shop NUA and the girls get down and dirty at the
Candy Bar Mud Wrestling night on Wednesday 6th.
- Bright n Queer have gone one better this year, not only can you see their popular
LGBT stand up comedy night at the Joogleberry on Friday 8th, but if you have always
fancied yourself as a bit of a Ross Noble, Jenny Éclair or Zoe Lyons you can find
out how at a special comedy workshop on Saturday 2nd at Komedia. For more slap stick,
Bent Double is also at Komedia on Sunday 3rd.
- Clubs and Cabaret come courtesy of Sunday Sundae at Audio, Girls on Top at Revenge,
Religion at Charles St, Legends, R-Bar, Queens Arms and The Zone.
- For something a bit different head over to the Caroline of Brunswick who start the
week with a Fetish Bazaar on Saturday 2nd and finish by screening the Rocky Horror
picture show on Friday 8th - fancy dress is most definitely encouraged!
- You can even get involved in Winter Pride without leaving the comfort of your sofa
by listening into Juice 107.2FM on Monday 4th-Friday 8th and help the presenters
solve some of Brighton mysteries! Every time they get a question right a donation
will go to Pride.
Winter Pride not only raises valuable funds for the charity Pride in Brighton &
Hove, but enables Pride to support smaller community groups through out all areas
of the LGBT community; some of which would find it hard to survive financially without
our help.
